THE FINE LINE TATTOO PROCESS
Big Or Small, The Reading Comes First
Whether it is one small piece or a sleeve we build over months, I want to know what it is carrying before I draw a single line. That is what makes it yours - not the size of it.
Step One: The Reading
Step Two: The Healing

Fine Line Tattoos
Thin Lines, Big Ideas
Thin, even linework. No heavy outline, no packed black.
That is a fine line tattoo - a style rather than a machine setting. Most of my fine line work runs between a 1RL and a 3RL needle, around 0.20 to 0.35mm. You will see it spelled fineline too, one word.
Here is the part people get wrong. The LINE is fine. The piece does not have to be. Some of my favourite work is fine line at full scale - a spine, a sleeve, a whole back - and that is where this style really gets to show off.
Single needle is equipment, fine line is a style. A single needle is a 1RL, one needle on the bar, the finest end of the same family. When someone offers you single needle work they are telling you the line weight, not the genre.

Fine Line That Lasts
Placement, Aftercare & Touch-Ups
Does fine line fade? It softens with time rather than disappearing - and once you know how it ages, you can plan for it beautifully.
A thinner line carries less pigment, so it softens sooner. Sun is the biggest factor by far - much bigger than time. Keep it covered or under sunscreen and a fine line piece stays crisp for years.
Inner forearm and upper arm are the champions here - low sun, low friction, stable skin. Upper back, collarbone, ribcage and thigh all hold beautifully, and those are the placements that suit bigger fine line work best. Fingers, hands and elbows move constantly, so they ask for more upkeep, and I will always tell you that before we start.
Most clients come back for a touch-up between year two and year five. Quick visit, and the piece is right back to new.
And the best bit - the bigger the piece, the better fine line holds. Giving a design room is what lets the detail survive, which is exactly why I love working at scale.
"It was absolutely amazing! I got a tarot reading and based off my intention and phrase I was resonating with Lucy came up with this one of a kind tattoo."

Drawn For You
Fine Line Tattoo Styles
Fine line is a way of drawing, not a subject. These are the three directions my clients take it most.
Botanical - stems, seed heads and trails. The most forgiving subject and the most beautiful at scale. A trail can run the whole length of a spine.
Symbols & sigils - a few decisive marks, drawn out of your reading rather than off a chart of meanings. Fine line and a Sigil want the same thing from each other.
Sacred geometry symbols and mandala work - the most demanding of the three, because the eye finds a crooked circle instantly. Worth every minute.

Intuitive Tattoos Owner
Fine line is what people choose when they want the tattoo to be quiet. I love that. And quiet does not mean small - some of my favourite pieces are fine line running the whole length of a spine.
Most of my fine line clients are getting their first tattoo, and I would rather spend the extra half hour on the nerves than pretend that part is not happening. Knowing which few lines are worth it is the part I am actually good at, and that comes out of the reading - never out of a folder of designs.

Fine Line Tattoo FAQ
Do fine line tattoos fade?
Fine line softens with time rather than disappearing. A thinner line carries less pigment, so it settles sooner than heavy blackwork does - and sun is what drives that, far more than the calendar. Keep it covered or under sunscreen and a fine line piece stays crisp for years.
What is the difference between fine line and single needle?
Single needle is equipment and fine line is a style. A single needle is a 1RL - one needle on the bar, the finest end of the same family rather than a separate kind of tattoo. Most fine line work runs between 1RL and 3RL, roughly 0.20 to 0.35mm.
Where does fine line hold up best?
Inner forearm and upper arm are the champions - low sun, low friction, stable skin. Upper back, collarbone, ribcage and thigh all hold beautifully, and those are the placements that suit bigger fine line work best. Fingers, hands and elbows move constantly, so they ask for more upkeep.
How long does a fine line tattoo last?
On a low-sun, low-friction placement a fine line tattoo stays crisp for roughly five to ten years before it wants attention, and most of my clients come back for their first touch-up between year two and year five. It is a quick visit, and the piece is right back to new.
Can fine line work be done big?
Yes, and large is where fine line is at its best. The LINE is fine - the piece does not have to be. A botanical trail can run the whole length of a spine, and sleeves and back pieces are some of my favourite things to draw. The bigger the piece, the better fine line holds.
Is fine line a good first tattoo?
Fine line is the most common first tattoo style and it is a lovely place to start. Most people describe it as a hot scratch rather than a burn, and there is no packing and no long shading pass, so the feeling is sharper but much shorter. Plenty of first pieces are finished inside an hour.
